11 Dec KCSIE 2024: Key Safeguarding Updates for Schools
Key Updates to KCSIE 2024 and How Simply IT Can Support Schools
The Department for Education (DfE) has introduced updates to the Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2024 guidance, effective from September 2024. These changes highlight emerging safeguarding challenges and emphasise the importance of precise language in addressing and managing risks to children and young people.
Simply IT is committed to supporting schools in understanding these updates and ensuring compliance. Here’s an overview of the key changes and how we can help schools implement effective safeguarding practices.
1. Expanded Definition of Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation
The term “exploitation” has been added alongside “abuse and neglect” throughout the guidance. This change acknowledges that harm to children may not only occur in the home but also in other environments, including online. Exploitation includes grooming for sexual or criminal activities, shifting the perspective to view affected children as victims rather than offenders.
2. Contextual Safeguarding: Protection Beyond the Home
KCSIE 2024 now emphasises safeguarding children from harm “within or outside the home, including online.” This aligns with the concept of Contextual Safeguarding, which addresses risks young people face in their neighborhoods, schools, and online spaces.
3. Early Help and Intervention
The guidance reiterates the importance of providing “help and support to meet the needs of children as soon as problems emerge.” This proactive approach ensures that issues are addressed before they escalate.
4. Updated Wording to Promote Understanding
- Harm caused by witnessing or experiencing domestic abuse is explicitly highlighted.
- The term “unexplained and/or persistent absences” replaces “deliberately missing education,” reflecting a more empathetic approach.
- References to “children who are lesbian, gay, bi, or trans” are updated to include “gender questioning,” with further guidance expected.
5. Emphasis on Detailed Record-Keeping
Schools must now document all safeguarding concerns, discussions, and decisions, including the rationale for actions taken—or not taken. This ensures accountability and provides clarity during inspections or audits.
