Safeguarding Students from AI Deepfake Threats in School

Safeguarding Students: A Guide to Tackling AI-Generated Image Exploitation in Schools

AI is transforming how schools teach, communicate, and operate, but it’s also bringing serious new risks.

One of the most concerning is the rise of AI-generated image exploitation, where fake or explicit content is created using real student photos, often without their knowledge or consent.

This article focuses on safeguarding students in the digital age. It’s designed to help Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) and school leaders understand this emerging threat, take steps to prevent it, and know how to respond if it occurs – because safeguarding students now extends far beyond the classroom.

What Is AI-Generated Image Exploitation?

AI tools can now generate highly realistic but completely fake images from a single photo. These images can be:

  • Sexualised or abusive
  • Shared online in seconds
  • Emotionally and reputationally damaging, even if fake

🚨 Why Schools Must Act

  • AI image generators are free and easy to use even for students
  • KCSIE now expects awareness of digital threats like this
  • Policies alone aren’t enough – IT infrastructure must support them

How to Help Prevent It

  1. Limit Image Exposure
Don’t post identifiable student images publicly. Use blurred faces, avatars, or watermarks.
  2. Educate Staff & Pupils
Train DSLs and staff to spot AI-manipulated images. Teach students about digital consent and image abuse.
  3. Update Your Safeguarding Policies
Include specific reference to AI-generated imagery, deepfakes, and digital abuse in your school’s policy.
  4. Use Monitoring & Filtering Tools
Work with your IT provider to implement tools that flag inappropriate use and secure devices.

🆘 If It Happens, Take Action

  1. Secure evidence – save links, screenshots, and metadata
  2. Notify your DSL immediately
  3. Inform parents and report to CEOP, Police, or LADO if needed
  4. Support the student – emotional support and counselling may be necessary
